Last night we had our book club meeting and The Guernsey literary & potato peel pie society, which we had read this last month, was an all round success. A series of lovely letters in didn't quite 'grab' everyone, but all agreed it was a 'nice' read.
Our new book Digging to America by Anne Tyler is to be reviewed 30th November.

Happy Birthday to Knit & Natter

It's hard to believe that a whole year has gone by since we began K&N with just myself and 4 others. We are now twice a week & regularly have 12 or more ladies on a Tuesday.

We were unusually only 10 last night, but that just made second helpings of cake an unexpected treat!

If you've ever wondered about joining us - just do it! 

We are a very friendly bunch and there is no high brow snobbery about our knitting. We knit what we like, when we like, are encouraged by others, and helped along at any stage if we get a little stuck. We are more than happy to teach complete beginners and haven't ever had anyone we couldn't get to master their knitting.

So, tea & biscuits, great company, free tuition & advice,  a chance to shop when it's closed!, and no commitment on your part to attend each week all for £2, sounds like a bargain to us. What are you waiting for? See you on Thursday then? (or Tuesday or both).
 

Because I felt like it!

'Not more yarn' cried Jane as I arrived up at the shop with the latest delivery.

It's true, we are running out of space, but it looked so yummy I couldn't resist.

Made from 100% wool, this would be perfect for knitted or felted acessories.

 
Felted purses in blue perhaps?

A hat or a bag in these autumnal hues..............

This one is just crying out for being turned into knitted bed socks or felted slippers.

Great little projects for Christmas gifts, don't you think?
 
  

Wet wet wet

After last Sunday's beautiful frosty start, I'm sorry to say it's mild & wet today. The dogs and I delayed our 7 O'clock start by an hour to allow the torrential downpour to pass, and then set of to witness the aftermath.

The dogs were put out that 'paddling' was not allowed today. 

Anyway, my thoughts turned to the hunter gatherer in me and I began looking for Rosehips.

 
Easy to recognise & good to turn into Rosehip syrup. I must warn you it doesn't taste like the Delrosa of our childhoods, which was packed with Vitamin C but had enough sugar to rot all your teeth before you were 10! Nether-the- less it is delicious drizzled onto porridge, pancakes, crumpets & ice cream. So here is my recipe.

Rosehip Syrup

2kg rosehips

4.5 litres water

1kg sugar

jelly bag (or old tea towel) for straining.

Put 3 litres of water into a large pan and bring to the boil.

Wash, and then chop the the hips quite finely. You can blitz then briefly in a food processor if you prefer.

Add the hips to the pan of boiling water and bring back to the boil. Remove pan from the heat & leave to sit for 15 mins.

Pour the pan contents through a jelly bag or tea towel suspended over a large bowl.

When the juice has drained through, tip the pulp left in the bag back into the pan and add the remaining 1.5 litres water. Bring to a simmer and leave simmering for 10 minutes. remove from the heat & leave for 15 minutes.

Pour through the jelly bag again.

Pour all the juice into a pan and boil until reduced to about 1.5 litres.

Stir in the sugar on a low heat, until dissolved, then boil rapidly for 5 mins.

Remove from the heat & pour into sterilised bottles.

Now whip up a few pancakes & afternoon tea is sorted!

Today is the last day for Phoenix card orders for September. Next order will go in end of November.
